A new smartphone and Ipad application called “Open the Books” allows for a level of transparency in government spending that was never before possible.
Search the United States Government checkbook since the year 2000. $31 Trillion in spending. The app also contains five year salary histories for 2.2 million federal employees and the last four years of all farm subsidies. Hyper-localize all federal spending by using your current GPS location, setting a custom location by zip code, or search by a vendor name or employee’s last name. In addition, with this app you can find the salary history of all Illinois government employees from virtually every level of government.
For The Good of Illinois is a 501(c)4 non-partisan, non-profit organization. Visit our website at www.openthebooks.com. We are a network of tens of thousands of Illinoisans, from all walks of life, who believe that public policy should rest on two principles: transparency and accountability.
As US Senator Everett Dirksen said, “When I feel the heat, I see the light.” With courtesy and respect, citizens should hold their elected officials accountable. The need for transparency has never been greater. Americans have never been more willing. Now is the time to stand up and be heroes.
“It reads your GPS, or you can type in any zip code in the United States, and what it does is tells you how federal tax dollars are being spent five, 15, 25 and 50 miles from where you are. So if for example you type in 21162, you see that 3.6 million dollars was given to the Adoption Exchange Association for infant adoption awareness training. Also, $200 million dollars for the Baltimore Gas and Electric Company. The app is the brainchild of Adam Andrzejewski who’s been traveling the country and speaking about what he hopes it achieves.”
“We want to put ten million eyes on the government spending,” explained Andrezejewski.
“if you click this button then it summarizes the last 12 years of grants into your city,” the founder told those who had gathered.
Lauren Bouton is from a rural town in Arizona and was shocked to learn that in 2009 a tiny municipal airport got a 4.4 million dollar federal grant.
“I don’t think I’ve met one person who has used the airport there ever,” Bouton stated.
Caroline Phelps grew up just outside of the nation’s capitol where for some reason, hundreds of thousands of dollars in farm subsidies were given.
“I have no idea where a farm would even be,” chuckled Phelps.
Yet there are tens of thousands of dollars going to agriculture subsidies in Northern VA.
Putting this information in the hands of as many people as possible is important because it totally breaks down the myth that taxes are spent on necessary public services. Users of this application can see down to the dollar that most tax revenue is spent on bloated bureaucratic budgets and wasteful government projects.
