The past couple weeks the internet has been ablaze with discussion on a recently announced Open Carry March on July 4, 2013. Long time liberty activist and radio show host Adam Kokesh posted on his facebook asking his large following if they would march alongside him in the event he launch an open carry march into the heart of the District of Columbia.
“We will march with rifles loaded & slung across our backs to put the government on notice that we will not be intimidated & cower in submission to tyranny. We are marching to mark the high water mark of government & to turn the tide. This will be a non-violent event, unless the government chooses to make it violent. Should we meet physical resistance, we will peacefully turn back, having shown that free people are not welcome in Washington, & returning with the resolve that the politicians, bureaucrats, & enforcers of the federal government will not be welcome in the land of the free. There’s a remote chance that there will be violence as there has been from government before, and I think it should be clear that if anyone involved in this event is approached respectfully by agents of the state, they will submit to arrest without resisting. We are truly saying in the SUBTLEST way possible that we would rather die on our feet than live on our knees.”
Since Washington D.C. has strict laws against displaying weapons in public, Kokesh and his fellow marchers risk arrest and up to 5 years in prison. Chief of D.C. Police Cathy Lanier has stated she will have officers waiting to arrest anyone who attempts to enter D.C. with a weapon visible.
Kokesh insists he will walk across the Memorial Bridge into D.C. to test the waters and show other marchers the response of the D.C. police. He has also called upon any available law enforcement and military officers to uphold their oath to the constitution and assist the protesters in their march.
“Fighting against tyranny in the U.S. is a good and noble cause, but significantly less so when, like today, there is no actual threat of tyranny coming to the U.S. By building disagreements over policy into a story of freedom versus tyranny, manipulators like Kokesh make their supporters feel more important, as if they are motivated by a noble cause not just political and economic frustration.”
“Liberals could learn a thing or two from Kokesh’s civil disobedience.
Fellow Libertarian activist and independent reporter Danny Panzella
www.truthsquad.tv) said he believes, “Those that march are exercising their God given right (to keep and bear arms) in defiance of a government that refuses to acknowledge rights and instead treats them as privileges.”
Some of Kokesh’s own supporters have spoken against his march. They believe his efforts play right into the very hands of the tyrannical government he opposes. His path from mainstream activist to “fringe” Anarchist is a wet dream for an oppressive government that continually claims there is a growing threat of “domestic extremism”.
Over the past few years, Adam Kokesh has gone from being a Marine to an Anti-War, Pro-Constitution activist and supporter of Iraq Veterans Against the War. Kokesh became a staunch supporter of Dr. Ron Paul and even ran for office himself. Since the end of the Paul Presidential campaign, and a soured relationship with Paul’s Campaign manager, Kokesh has become a self proclaimed Anarchist.
He supports Voluntaryism, a branch of Anarchy that professes the goal of creating a Voluntary Society where all interaction between humans is voluntary and lacks force. This philosophy sees the idea of government as immoral because of the use of force. So does this armed march into the so called District of Crooks align with his principles? Is this “peaceful” march an act of aggression, or self-defense?
When Kokesh writes that his goal is to “put the government on notice that we will not be intimidated & cower in submission to tyranny”, he is speaking to a large disenfranchised piece of the American population. His words find the ears and support of those who watched in horror as President George W. Bush launched Wars of Aggression and tricked many Americans, including Kokesh, into supporting these murderous acts. He finds friends in those who bought the Obama lies, believing in promises of Change that have yet to be delivered.
Many Americans have come to see past the typical left-right, Democrat-Republican party line and are seeking answers outside the political norm. Americans are searching for answers and solutions to the growing police state, to the overwhelming police state, and the coming Drone War on American soil.
It was an act of aggression when the United States House of Representatives, the Senate and the President overwhelmingly voted and supported the National Defense Authorization Act of 2012 which allows indefinite detention of American citizens. It is an act of aggression when the government decides Americans who support the constitution, stockpile seven days worth of food or profess pro-liberty beliefs are a threat to the Homeland.
When the government declares Martial Law Lockdown on American City it is an act of aggression. When the State decides they have the right to dictate what you can and can not ingest in your own body, that is an act of aggression. When the government declares it is legal to murder American citizens with drones, without a trial, that is an act of aggression. When the President of a supposedly free nation has a “kill list”, that is an act of aggression.
When free people around the nation decide it is time to organize a peaceful march into the home of those who are supposed to represent the people, that is a courtesy call. It is a wake up call. This march is a peace offering, a gentle push reaffirming our rights as free people to abolish the government when that government no longer serves the will of the people.
At this point, those marching may be in the minority. Most social movements that effect real change take 100-150 years to truly have the desired effect. Perhaps the past few years are beginning to culminate as we are seeing that change take place in the real world. Many people have long asked why Europe and the Middle East are so quick to organize, riot, and call for change, while America sits by idly. On July 4th, 2013, the wait just might be over.
